Bingo Gives Couple 50 Golden Years of Marriage

How often have you met or chatted to someone through either going to play bingo in a club or enjoying a few games online, and thought how well you hit it off? Not necessarily romantically, but perhaps you just found something of a kindred spirit through a shared love of bingo.
Marie and Tony Lines (no pun intended) of Watford have bingo to thank for their love story, which has now spanned 50 years.

In 1961, at a bingo night in Oxhey, near Watford, Tony saw Marie across the hall and decided to ask her out while she was queuing for the toilet!

3 years later, and the couple were married on September 6th 1964 at the register office in Clarendon Road.

Both grew up in South Oxhey and at the time of meeting, Marie worked at a blouse factory in Station Road. Tony was not working too far away, at a weaver to wearer tailor.

After meeting Marie, Tony got a job at Fishburn Inks and they had their first child, daughter Heidi. Son Jason was born 5 years later and the family moved to Welwyn Garden City.

Both had a variety of different and interesting jobs after the final addition to their family arrived (no doubt never a silent moment when each other asked how their days had been of an evening!)

After settling in Welwyn Garden City Marie worked on the gluer and Tony on the cutter/creaser at Poppers Print. Tony then went to Smith Kline for 9 years, followed by a few years working in security for MOD. Marie worked for Help the Aged during this time.

The one thing that remained the same was their continued love for and playing of bingo, often still going together.

Most recently they bought a bungalow in Hitchin and are both now enjoying their retirement. As well as playing Mecca Bingo, Gala Bingo and various other clubs around the country, Marie and Tony have plenty of other interests to keep them busy!

Tony’s hobbies include karaoke, magic and driving. Marie takes pleasure in knitting, reading and driving, although not all at the same time of course!

Time has passed quickly for the couple and they are now approaching their golden wedding anniversary on September 6th. They are planning on celebrating with a meal at the Hotel Novotel Stevenage.

We wish them well, and for many more years of wedded bliss!

Who needs dating agencies, online dating, or even blind dates? And who knew bingo was such a hotbed for true love? Marie and Tony’s story might just make you a little more open to any flirty behaviour going on behind the bingo cards in the future!
