A twenty-year-old student managed to get a full house and win a car – on her first ever game of bingo.
Katherine Reid, a student from the University of Southampton, was visiting friends at Cardiff University when the group decided to head to Depot Cardiff for a game of bingo. After an unsuccessful night – and lots of alcohol – her luck turned in the last game.
She said: “I thought bingo was going to be boring but it was really rowdy. We’d spent a few hours drinking and having a laugh because we hadn’t even been close to winning anything the whole night. Then suddenly on the last game my numbers started coming up one by one. I shouted ‘full house’ and got on stage and the DJ told me I had won a car. I couldn’t believe it. Me and my friends went absolutely nuts, we couldn’t stop screaming.”
Her prize was a second-hand Volkswagen Beetle, but here’s the rub – Katherine can’t drive yet.
“We all sat in the car and I just could not believe it was mine,” she said. “I rang my mum from the driver’s seat to tell her that I’d won a car – then she started screaming too! She said: ‘What are you going to do with a car? You can’t even drive.’”
Katherine has had to leave the car (which she has affectionately dubbed ‘Erica’) in Cardiff but plans to take it on “a little road trip to Southampton” (with her mum driving, of course). “Then it’s going to have to sit on my driveway for a little bit while I get my driver’s licence. I’m so motivated to pass the test now I know I’ve got a car waiting.”
