The aim of this guide is to explain in more detail what bets are available to you within the football section of your chosen betting or casino site. It also tries to explain how you can find some extra value if you shop around a little more when placing your football bets on the Premier League.

Why? In brief, the betting exchange generally provides the true odds of the outcome that you are betting on. So you can price check your selections and actually see how far out the betting price is comparing your chosen bookmaker price to the exchange. The first thing that spooks people about the exchange is the decimal odds format. Once you understand decimal odds everything else is plain sailing.
If you get confused with decimal and fractional odds there is a simple equation you can do which could be useful. If you add the top and bottom together and divide it by the bottom you get the decimal odds.
For example, 5/2 is 5+2 = 7 divided by 2 = 3.50. 13/8 is 13+8 = 21 divided by 8 = 2.62.
However, most sportsbooks have the option of changing the odds settings so you don’t even have to do the maths.
The back odds are in blue on Betfair and Matchbook with the lay odds in pink. (The lay odds is if you want to play bookmaker and take a bet on this selection).
On BETDAQ, the back odds are in yellow with the lay odds in green. So now you can quickly scan if you are taking value from your chosen bookie. Essentially the nearer the odds the more value you are taking.
For example, you back Aston Villa to win at 2.50 which is 6/4 at your bookies, on the exchanges the odds are 2.75 which is 7/4 if you constantly see big odds differences maybe it time to shop around. Now don’t get me wrong, most of the time there will be a variance in the bookmakers favour but, especially when betting on the Premier League if the odds are constantly way out you’re not getting good value from your bookie.
To be blunt, brand loyalty in this game generally gets you nowhere and it is well worth looking at other bookies odds to see how they compare to your current one. They are after all competing for your business.

Accumulators
This form of bet especially in the win/draw/win format is by far the most popular way to wager on the Premier League, with you only getting a return if all your selections win. The more teams you pick the bigger the return, but the more likelihood that one will let you down. However, you can do an ACCA bet using other bet types, mix and matching them into an accumulator.

Price Boosts & Value Betting

This form of betting is not for the faint hearted, with odds moving up and down very quickly, it can all be a bit confusing.
This style of betting is certainly not for everyone but might suit either someone who is watching the game and feels like a calculated gamble or for someone who has a plan and knows what they want to execute and when they want to do it.

Bill is in the pub watching the game and after 15 minutes the score is 0-0. However, both teams are going at it and he reckons there are going to be goals. Bill backs over 2.5 goals in-play at 13/10 or 2.30.

The point here is to be successful whilst betting in-play you either have to be watching and make a decision based on performance so far, or you have a plan and you stick to it.

This betting market or promotion probably offers the most value in football betting, even though it flies under the radar when it comes to the average punter.
Just in case you haven’t heard of this bet before, it’s a pre-match bet on the win/draw/win market. If your chosen team leads the game at any time by 2 clear goals, you get paid as winner. You can do these bets as ACCAs, or multiples. You can even mix and match them with other markets and some bookmakers will even let you put them in a bet builder.
However, the value in these bets is just wagering on a team on its own. Why? Teams often lose 2-0 or 3-1 leads giving you, dare I say, a small edge against the bookmaker. Tottenham and Everton just last season both lost twice when winning the game 2-0 in the Premier League.
In fact, Tottenham hold the record losing 11 times from 2up positions since the Premier League began. How embarassing!
The point is teams come back from 2-0 down and it’s a great feeling to be paid out on “losing bets” if you were to back a team normally, reducing risk to your selection. This is what gives you that small advantage.
Statistics within previous games here are again your friend and you could come up with a strategy targeting certain teams. Look for teams that start games fast by scoring early goals. Also, underdogs can often go 2-0 up and you could have an early winning bet with no stress. Don’t forget on this betting market, you still win the bet if your selection wins the game, you just don’t get paid early.

First goal scorer betting is like speed dating, such potential but often over before you have even sat down.

For those of you that aren’t aware, you can back players to score first, last, anytime or even 2 or more in any Premier League game. It is hard to find any real value in these bets apart from when a bookmaker offers a boost or superboost on a key player to score anytime during the game. However, if you like having a punt on these kinds of bets there are a few key things you can look at before you make your selection or selections.
- Target penalty takers.
- Look at their form or expected goals if you like looking at stats.
- Try to pick player that will play the full 90 minutes
- Don’t chase big odds unless the player is a set piece specialist, Maguire and Gabriel spring to mind.
- Look at the opposition’s defensive record, do they leak goals or do they give away very little.
- Sometimes bookmakers are slow to cut prices on rotated/backup strikers and they might be over-priced if starting.
