Are BetWright & Slots Temple a sign of a no-bonus future?
Two of our latest, most exciting new casino launches are both conspicuous in one particular area; neither have a welcome offer. But that’s not stopping our players from signing up in droves. What does this say about where the industry is and what players really want?
Welcome bonuses have been the bread and butter of gambling sites for years. Slapping a proper welcome package together, usually consisting of a deposit bonus and free spins, has been the conventional way to entice new players. That has gone pretty much unquestioned.
Of course, the nature and tenor of these welcome offers have evolved over the years.
The Old Days
Back in the internet wild west days, a casino could boldly proclaim a welcome offer like “Get £500 with no deposit necessary!” With fewer canny consumers and advertising regulations back then, it might have taken some serious exploration to work out that the bonus wasn’t all that it seemed, and the most ludicrous terms and wagering requirements were being obscured.
The dawn of the significant T&Cs display with every offer meant that players wised up very quickly. It didn’t take long to work out whether the terms were completely unfair, and whether you were being shafted in some way.
There was pull as well as push. Operators began to get taxed more heavily on bonuses, so they were unwilling and unable to post up some of the more ludicrously large bonuses.
Transparent, Free & Fair Spins
In the late 2010s, we saw an increasing culture of transparency, and a focus on fairness in welcome bonuses. Players appreciated that welcome offers were not realistically them simply being handed fistfuls of free money. They didn’t care so much that huge sums of cash weren’t on the table. They just wanted something that was upfront and fair, and didn’t shaft them in the terms.
We’ve always given a lot of credit to PlayOJO for this shift, who truly pioneered no wagering free spins offers.
These still exist today, and they are one of the most popular types of welcome offers. Operators don’t have to pay the same sort of taxes on them that they do with bonuses, and players like that they can genuinely keep what they win, even if what they win isn’t a huge amount of money.
Unfortunately, some of the no wagering goodwill has slightly ebbed away. If a no wagering offer is too “generous,” they can be picked off by roving gangs of bonus abusers who rinse the free spins and then move on to the next gaff. These guys make everyone’s life harder and ruin the fun for proper goodtime players!
So if even the fair offers are not quite what they used to be, how does a new brand stand out from the crowd and attract players in a frankly rather saturated market?

We’ve listed these two, exciting new brands and neither have a welcome offer! In the past, we wouldn’t have even considered listing them. Yet, because of shifts in bonusing in the industry and what players are looking for, we agreed, and both have done remarkably well in the first couple of weeks.
So what are these things we think “players are looking for” and why did we suspect that these two brands fulfilled them?
- Brand-spanking new and independent UKGC licences: They are the only sites on their respective licences and this makes them completely unique. They are unencumbered by much of the bureaucracy of being on a networked casino. The financials, including deposits and withdrawals, are comparatively efficient. This is quickly becoming the thing that is most important to players. Sites that you can find on this page, Independent Casinos, are the real gold dust here.
- A certifiably winning platform: In BetWright’s case, though independently licensed, the casino and sportsbook is built on Playbook’s trusty platform. That means it shares DNA with casinos that have proved very popular and lucrative with players. Other Playbook examples include DragonBet, Gentleman Jim and PricedUp. All of these sites attract the most awesome players, so we knew that BetWright would be no different, even without the free spins offers.
- Something Different: Slots Temple has two serious USPs. It’s like a slots library where you can go in and try everything as a demo. Formerly a sort of slots encyclopaedia, Slots Temple got themselves a licence, which means that rather than just testing the slots and reading about the stats, you can now play real money versions! It’s an absolute game changer and the dream casino for slots aficionados. The second USP is that Slots Temple runs constant free and pay to play slots tournaments at a rate we’ve never seen before. They have fostered a completely unique slots playing community.
For these reasons, we knew that these two new independent casinos would be player fodder. We think this could be the start of a new era that’s not all about bonuses and terms and conditions. Rather, operators are creating quality products that cater to new desires in the industry. These are not just based on the sugar-high of a welcome bonus. But quality, loyalty and independence!
