Welcome bonuses have been the bread and butter of gambling sites for years. Slapping a proper welcome package together, usually consisting of a deposit bonus and free spins, has been the conventional way to entice new players. That has gone pretty much unquestioned.

The Old Days
Back in the internet wild west days, a casino could boldly proclaim a welcome offer like “Get £500 with no deposit necessary!” With fewer canny consumers and advertising regulations back then, it might have taken some serious exploration to work out that the bonus wasn’t all that it seemed, and the most ludicrous terms and wagering requirements were being obscured.
The dawn of the significant T&Cs display with every offer meant that players wised up very quickly. It didn’t take long to work out whether the terms were completely unfair, and whether you were being shafted in some way.
There was pull as well as push. Operators began to get taxed more heavily on bonuses, so they were unwilling and unable to post up some of the more ludicrously large bonuses.
Transparent, Free & Fair Spins
In the late 2010s, we saw an increasing culture of transparency, and a focus on fairness in welcome bonuses. Players appreciated that welcome offers were not realistically them simply being handed fistfuls of free money. They didn’t care so much that huge sums of cash weren’t on the table. They just wanted something that was upfront and fair, and didn’t shaft them in the terms.
