Flutter Completes Acquisition of tombola
Flutter Entertainment, the Irish gambling megacorporation, announced that it’s completed its high profile acquisition of tombola. So what does this mean for the beloved North East of England family business?
tombola, the family founded, low stakes bingo brand that has been one of the most popular UK bingo sites for two decades, has been been scooped up by “the man.”
tombola was always known for its independence. Unlike the majority of other gambling sites, they create and design all their own games. They were also at the forefront of safety and security for its users, bringing in measures like deposit limits and staking rules before they became mandatory in the industry. They’ve always had a focus on good-natured, sustainable fun which has allowed them to avoid much of the negative publicity that surrounds sports betting brands, and their perceived aggressive marketing tactics and customer retention.
Now, these worlds will certainly collide as tombola joins a long list of famous gambling brands under the Flutter umbrella. The deal, though announced towards the end of last year, was confirmed on 10th January 2022. Flutter paid £402 million for tombola.
Peter Jackson, Flutter’s Chief Executive Officer, celebrated the deal in a statement; “tombola is a business we have long admired for its product expertise, highly recreational customer base and focus on sustainable play.”
Flutter was formed in 2016 when heavyweight brands Paddy Power and Betfair merged. Known as Paddy Power Betfair, in early 2019 they announced their rebranding as Flutter Entertainment. Later that year, they acquired Canadian company, The Stars Group, which included the famous PokerStars brand.

tombola is estimated to attract over 400,000 players a month and will add a new dimension to Flutter’s image. At this stage, it is unclear how the acquisition will affect the day to day mechanics of tombola. Will tombola players even notice a difference?
