Apple Pay had been in development for some time. In 2013, negotiations began with card companies like American Express, Visa and Mastercard as well as with certain banks around the world. Much of this planning and dealing was done in secret. Finally, the launch of Apple Pay was announced in 2014, a year later. This was at the same time as the launch of the iPhone 6. In the announcement, Apple focused on the strength of the security of the Apple Pay method. Tim Cook, the CEO, pointed out that consumers had lost faith in the classic, plastic card. In his estimation, people no longer trusted the reliance on the magnetic strip and the PIN code. In July 2015, the method was finally launched in the United Kingdom. Although there was a fairly gradual catching-on process, the payment method is now widely used in person and on online.
