Famous fans of Bingo: Adele, Harry Styles, and other celebrities who love the game

Adele

In a plot twist that nobody expected, pop superstar Adele is preparing to trade the bright lights of Las Vegas for Bingo nights at home.

The musical powerhouse, 35, revealed at a recent concert that her post-residency plans include joining the long list of celebrities that regularly indulge in the beloved game of chance.

While there is nothing better than the exhilarating feeling of getting a full house, Adele noted the community aspect of the sociable gambling game.

Recalling her “grandmas” and “aunties” playing Bingo on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout her childhood, she said “…it wasn’t until I was older, I realised it was a socialising thing more than anything.”

Adele’s desire to take up Bingo at the height of her fame is further proof that it is not simply a pastime for pensioners, but a game that can be enjoyed by all including the rich and famous.

Gary Barlow

When Gary Barlow penned the song “Greatest Day”, he may have been describing how he felt after winning a game of Bingo. The Take That singer started his career belting out tunes at a Bingo Hall and makes no secret of his love for the game.

In 2017, Gary shared several snaps on Instagram of himself hosting a Bingo night at the Cameron House Hotel, adding the hashtag #BarlowBingo.“It’s a bit of a @takethat tradition that one night during the tour, all the cast and band get together for a game of bingo!” the former X Factor judge told his followers at the time. “So last night was bingo night!”

Sadie Frost

They enjoyed many wild nights on the town as members of the Primrose Hill set, but in recent years actress Sadie Frost and her supermodel pal Kate Moss have embraced a more laid-back lifestyle which now involves plenty of Bingo.

“We still have a really good time, doing things normal grown-ups do with their children, playing games”, Frost told Hello! Magazine in 2010. “On Saturdays, we cook lunch for our kids and hang out in the garden. I had a great time on Saturday night playing bingo at home with the children.”

In 2014, Sadie even helped raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust during their Bingo night.

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Catherine Zeta-Jones

Welsh actress Catherine Zeta-Jones inherited her love for Bingo from her working-class parents David and Patricia, who won £100,000 playing the game. Their windfall allowed them to enrol their now-famous daughter in dance and ballet classes.  The “Intolerable Cruelty” star would eventually go on to acting school.

It is no surprise that Catherine has reportedly continued the tradition by hosting Bingo parties at the lavish New York home she shares with her husband, Michael Douglas.

Russell Crowe

Before Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe found fame, he had some interesting jobs –including being a Bingo teller.

During an appearance on the Conan O’Brien show in 1997, the “Gladiator” star revealed that right out of high school he worked at a resort island called Pakatoa but was eventually fired from his job for acting out at the Bingo Hall after getting bored of the gig.

When international football star Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t busy scoring goals, he likes to unwind with a game of Bingo.

He previously revealed that although he initially started attending Bingo games in a bid to improve his English when he first moved to Old Trafford in 2003, he soon began to enjoy it.

“Playing Bingo can be very exciting. It can be very exciting because you can be there waiting for a long time for just the one number to make the game complete” Ronaldo told a Portuguese newspaper in 2008 “Then you see one of your friends you are playing against get his lucky number before you”.

Prince William

It’s not uncommon to hear of celebrities having a love for Bingo, but royalty may be somewhat of a surprise.

Prince William reportedly enjoyed regular games whilst at university and it has now become a family affair. In 2020, The Prince of Wales and his wife Princess Catherine joined residents from the Shire Hall Care Home in Cardiff for a wholesome game of Bingo via Zoom. The pair showed off their calling skills when William announced, “One little duck, number two and Catherine followed up by saying “Eight and seven, 87. Six and two, tickety-boo”.

Harry Styles

Harry Styles

Should Harry Styles’ music career not work out, the singer could always pursue a career as a Bingo caller. In 2017, the former One Direction singer chaired a game of Bingo at a Warrington care home as part of a BBC special with his pal, Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw. He showed off his number skills with the likes of “44, droopy drawers” and got the thumbs up from many of the residents.

Robbie Williams

Robbie Williams is such a huge fan of Bingo that in the music video for his 2002 hit “Feel”, he is seen emerging from a Bingo Hall. Not only was the inclusion of a Bingo game in the video a very personal touch, but it also served as a reminder of the retro game’s timeless charm.

In 2004, he visited a Bingo Hall in his hometown of Stoke and enjoyed a game with pensioners. Robbie said at the time: “It’s a great atmosphere in here and there’s loads of laughter. It gives a break to people who are carers”.
