New Bingo Sites From 2014/2015
The Gambling (Licensing and Advertising) Bill has now become law. Before summer 2014, most online bingo sites held licences that were issued by a foreign licensing body in a jurisdiction approved on a special white list. The white list included Alderney, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Antigua and Barbuda and Malta. What was important was that the licences weren’t issued by the the UK Gambling Commission.
The legislation that was brought in means now all remote gambling sites will need a UK licence, although those with a whitelisted licence can continue to trade while the UK application is approved. Another downside of this for the bingo sites is that a UK licence is much more expensive.
There was also the move to tax remote gambling at the point of consumption. This means that bingo sites with UK customers now have to pay 15% tax on the gross profits from those customers. This came into effect in December 2014.
As a result of all these changes, smaller sites may find it harder to survive, due to the cost of a UK gambling licence. This would especially be the case if a separate licence is needed for each site on a network, rather than just for the network itself. This issue still hasn’t received any further clarification.
Some sites have done better than others since they’ve launched. Some particular success stories so far have been Butterfly Bingo (launched in March 2014) and Wish Bingo (launched in June.) They both have generous welcome bonuses for example, but because of all these changes, they may be forced to lower the amount they offer. This is because a large bonus with the gross profits taxed at 15% may end up being too expensive for the bingo sites to continue offering it.
To avoid this, many bingo sites have started offering player incentives that aren’t treated as cash for taxation purposes. These incentives include free or BOGOF bingo tickets, free spins on slots, tangible prizes and prize draw entries, amongst many more.
Mobile bingo has really taken off in 2014/2015, with more and more sites developing apps suitable for mobile devices and the development of HTML5. This has been reflected in the sites being launched this year which have clearly realised the importance of the mobile boom.
So the two events which could sum up the trends for bingo sites in 2014/2015 would be the changes in UK gambling law and the ever growing trend for mobile devices to play bingo on.
With important developments in 2015, it will be interesting to see what potential 2016 could hold for any more key changes.
