Freshness – This site is the newest. That is an objective fact – no amount of tinkering and testing by me could change that fact.

BresBet shares some DNA with Bet St George, most notably the same Playbook platform that runs through it. Though the brand has been around for 5 years, they had a rebranding and re-licensing in 2025.

What makes it special

Unique Licence – That gives players the ultimate financial flexibility, unlike when dozens of sites are housed on the same licence (you won’t find any of those on the independent casino page, I can tell you that!)
Generous no wagering free spins – BresBet, like its saintly brother, has one of the most generous welcome offers. Even though wagering requirements were lowered across the board in January 2026, most sites have opted to go to the upper end of that range. Not BresBet!
Larger selection of software developers and games than Bet St George – We expect Bet St George to follow but that’s a comparatively big tick in the BresBet column and is likely to keep them popular for a while.

One issue to keep in mind

Ken Howells

Ken Howells may sound like a bloke you just met down the pub, but I can assure you this brand is so much more. Driven by EveryMatrix tech, similar to one of our previous faves Bet Tom, Ken Howells is a mix of modern and old-school, thanks to its history as a telephone betting company.

What makes it special

An everything emporium – Slots: tick. Live Casino: tick. Sports betting: tick. Ken Howells is an incredibly well rounded independent casino with something for everyone. The sports betting product is incredibly competitive, especially when it comes to UK horse and greyhound racing.
The licence – Completely unique and standalone while having some equally bespoke software from EveryMatrix.
Fast Payouts – I can confirm same-day payouts, which I know players really value. Of course, there may be circumstances where there is a delay, perhaps because more due diligence is required. But hey, these are the protections necessary in a regulated industry to keep everyone safe.

One issue to keep in mind

One issue to keep in mind

There is a rather disappointing lack of casino games for a brand that calls itself a casino. In fact, last time I was having a play, there were no live casino games at all. These are the bread and butter of online games, as well the hugely popular live game shows we have now. I’m aware that this will put off some of you.

2022 – A fresh trend?

This page’s journey began back in 2022, when I noticed that proprietary casinos running on their own exclusive software started to be increasingly popular with our users. Many of our most popular and best performing brands were not tethered to the large platforms.

The arrival of Merkur Slots, the online slots version of the high street brand formerly known as Cashino, was very well received in 2022 and run on Eyas Gaming technology. Unfortunately, the company then went on to shelve their plans for more UK sites and took it off the market. But it really showed me the direction of travel.

2023 – Mad Brands!

To make it as an independent operator is not easy. Brands that seemed really exciting at the time, like MadSlots which launched on the undersaturated Viral Interactive platform, went caput after a bunch of company failings. If I had to pick out one of the potential disadvantages it’s the precariousness of some of these lone wolves, without big corporate backing. One mistake, or the industry winds shift, and it could be all over.

2024 – The Independent Revolution we still see today?

In 2024, we listed more revolutionary independent casinos than ever before. We struck up a personal relationship with the team at Midnite, which with a bit of hindsight, is the brand that has most ushered in the new generation of independent casino betting sites we have today. Welcome Offers: Many of these sites have much more interesting welcome offers with exciting components that you just won’t find with the big platforms. Often, these sites just have more latitude to experiment with the types of bonuses that they can bring their players. Many of these sites have no deposit slots components (like NetBet) or no wagering slots components. The majority of the brands listed offer these, unlike the majority of online casinos. As some experienced gamblers may know, the rules around what welcome bonuses a site can offer changed in January 2026, due to new rules from the UKGC. Who are these independent casino sites not for? – The Disadvantages

I have spent a lot of time extolling the virtues of these independent brands because often they are the best and most sought after products by players. However, that will not necessarily be true for everyone. Some of these lone wolves can be a little quirky…

So if you like the might, the security, the manpower, the efficiency and the backing of a big network behind your casino brands, then these independent casinos might not be for you. The main red flags I’ve found that could irk some traditional casino players are as follows.

Small Games Catalogues: If you’re used to a casino having literally thousands of slot games (think Skill-on-net with 6,000 plus), some of these brands might seem a bit provincial. For example, when Gentleman Jim first launched it pretty much only had Pragmatic Play games. To be fair they’ve expanded since, but it gives you a sense of the different leagues some of these sites are in.
Lacking Infrastructure: Recently, we’ve run into some issues when trying to sign-up at some of these independent sites. For example at 36Vegas, where without an automated, credit-checking affordability system, new players were being asked to provide manual documentation before they could even sign-up. We understand the need for due diligence and KYC measures to protect vulnerable players, but Deary Me it’s not the nineties anymore!
Debit Card Only: This is a familiar sight for those signing up at smaller indy casinos. It makes sense for a small operation to only accept debit cards as a payment method because most people use them and there’s less of a risk of abuse or fraud from the customers for the business. However, some people really do prefer the extra layer of online protection that e-wallets like PayPal and Paysafecard afford them, or banking adjacent products like Trustly. For maximum choice, you’re probably going to want to go to a big network.
Risk of Collapse: Unfortunately, we live in quite a volatile time in the UK gambling market. With the tax rises and bonus changes, things are a little uncertain. Frankly, small casinos have always popped up and disappeared from the market. The smaller the enterprise, the higher the likelihood it may just go bust one day and disappear. For those who want a little more long term sureness, go with the big behemoth that’s existed for a decade or two and can weather any storm!
Dodgy Sites: We, of course, do not feature any unregulated casinos and I have personally lobbied for their removal from the UK internet. Unfortunately, some slip the net and they can be accessible.
